Psychological analysis of Dan Simper

The best way to deal with Troll Simper is NOT to ignore him!

He (or she?, it?) has given us an almost complete "dump" of his brain's
contents. The amount of what we can conclude from that is rather
amazing:

- He is either an owner of an XBox game console, or intending to buy
one.
- He is a promoter/supporter of George W. Bush, regarding him as a
symbol for the U.S. superpower.
- He has consistently stated support and admiration of the U.S.A., as
well as provided evidence of medium to good english language in
writing. A U.S. citizenship seems doubtful given only his previously
used German/Dutch/Netherlandish name alias(es).
- His computer system knowledge stems partially from probably about 10
years of own experience (some knowledge of the Amiga's history), but,
too, from a wild surfing for "nostalgic" systems that he is very
unlikely to have ever used (Eniac, C64 etc.). He seems to be lost in
the old day's battles over which PC or "homecomputer" will become the
market leader, and which will die. He has completely lost track of the
"post war" development of OpenSource, Java and the Internet, making it
possible for precisely these outnumbered systems to be used
increasingly and once again make gains in popularity in the process
(e.g. BeOS).
- He has advanced expertise in "staying invisible" on the Internet by
using both a public Proxy-server and Googlegroups to post.
- He is a racist, more than once using the N-word in african american
newsgroups, knowingly being offensive.
- His opinions are full of prejudice, the fact of which either evades
him or is what he finds nothing wrong with. In fact his main intention
thus far seems to have been to disseminate his biased views to as large
an audience as possible.

Chances are that I don't subscribe to this newsgroup. I am simply
monitoring the newsgroups the Anagram Troll is using as his score card.
Any posts from me are a result of that monitoring. I only post to the
newsgroup being spammed, not to the score card newsgroup, thus I will
not see any replies directly to this post.

indicates some psychological abnormality; no one can put 3 hours per
day into trolling without something wrong.

There's also a self-deprecating aspect of his posting. For example, he
often talks about his having a small penis. There's a paranoia too:
people are often trying to rape him with their much larger phalli (for
ex. a roomate with a 30-inch member). I don't think he intends us to
take anything he says seriously, but this could be an inferiority
complex showing. (Not over penis length, but more generally his social
standing among other males.)

Personally, I don't think Mr. Simper (et al) is that dangerous, only
because he doesn't "disseminate his biased views" in an articulate
manner; but rather with a self-mocking pseudo-irony. He intends to
sound like a moron; that's his game. I'd be more concerned about him if
he were eloquent and sincere in his views; then he could do some
serious damage.

One night, I tried to rile him (counter-troll) by registering a
phony Dan Simper account (pain_wheeze instead of pain_wheels) and,
following is.matur, posting apologies for whatever he had said, under
his name, so as to prevent him from getting fed. It looked to everyone
else that Mr. S had a change of heart: they wouldn't post angry replies
and it denied him his fun. I quickly realized that I couldn't keep up
with him (unlike him, I have a life) but this may have been the reason
his latest identity committed "suicide".

In sum, though, what I think of Mr. Simper (aka Bruno Beam, et al) is
that he's just a 15-year-old (he gave his birthdate once as 1 Jan 1990,
though maybe that shouldn't be trusted) with some adjustment issues. I
think he's probably American (he wrote the date, on 9 Feb, as
2/9/2005), white upper-middle to upper class, and politically apathetic
(or teen faux-anarchist) with liberal parents who either consult or
manage non-profits. When he's 20, he'll probably look back on his
pro-Bush and especially his racist troll-posts with shame, and
(assuming his offline identity isn't somehow uncovered) be very
thankful no one knows who he is.

Keep in mind who most trolls are: male, teenage, upper-middle-class,
smart,
bored-as-hell with high school and the suburbs, and somewhat behind
socially. Most importantly: too much time on their hands.

What we do know about his trolling technique is that
1. he's using a "private" newsgroup to keep track of his flame threads:
is.matur, alt.test,...

2. he's only, but definitely, reading the headlines: "comp.c64.games"
gets
a post about "C64 games are much better than Playstation2-games",
"alt.racing.formula1" becomes "Formula1 is a waste of gas and..." (one
of my favourites)


To counter-troll, one would have to go after his "command center". For
every
post appearing in his next "is.matur", it should be flooded with at
least 10
posts, automatically generated, but still bearing his name and random
contents.
Or it can be disrupted manually by posting something into his "diary".


Anyway, i'm envisioning he's up to 2 possible careers: Either he wants
to be
a human bulk-mailer, that achieves what no bulk-mailer has accomplished
before by finding a way around every spam filter with real intelligence
behind every
single mail,
or a talk show host, that just has to have an "opinion about
everything".

Dan Simper wouldn't make it as a talk-show host, from what I've seen.
He's good at the 5-second punch, because that's about as long as I
think his posts go. Now, some of them are very funny (many are just
lame). The funny ones, if he developed them, could become art. But he'd
need more than 5-second punches to string together a talk show.
